The EPRI Distribution Assets research team works at the forefront of medium-voltage utility R&D.
Our team executes projects that guide new equipment designs, improve reliability, and guides deployment of new technologies onto the distribution system.
This position works as part of the research team to understand how distribution equipment performs, ages, and fails.
Specifically, this role is meant to apply industry-leading electrical and materials engineering principals to distribution equipment performance.
This includes laboratory testing, failure analysis and forensics, and field demonstrations.
This research has elements of work with a team, as well as some work performed independently.
Results from the research are shared with utilities across the world.
Duties &
Responsibilities:
Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project teamConducts independent research and begins to manage small, less complex projectsProvides technical advice and counsel to other professionals within EPRIAssists Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentationsReviews progress and evaluates results.
Makes changes in methods, design or equipment where necessaryExercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignmentAdditional Job Information:

4-5 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience requiredGood verbal and written communication skillsRequired some supervision and guidance to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projectsResponsible for the success of individual projectsWorks closely with contractors or staff to complete project researchMay participate in multiple projectsIndividual contributorMay present research results to advisors or technical staff/membersStarting to develop technical depth in 1-2 areasFocus on projects within a programIdeal Candidate:
Knowledge of utility distribution systems and its components with a focus on understanding the asset life cycle of distribution equipment and componentsHighly desired for the candidate to have a technical background in material science especially with materials that are commonly used in medium-voltage distribution equipment and/or experience in performing failure/forensic analysis and understanding of leading approaches for accelerated aging of componentsStrong technical knowledge and skills related to the electrical and mechanical performance of medium voltage distribution equipment and line components including but not limited to devices, cable/conductors, structures, transformers, and insulators.
Demonstrated experience in performing and managing laboratory testing activities including the safe design and implementation of tests.
An ideal candidate would provide direction to lab staff and require minimal guidance from project managersEnthusiasm and ability to identify, develop, and scope innovative research projects to increase reliability, affordability, and safety of the distribution systemAbility to develop project plans and execute with minimal supervision from project managers including management of budget and internal/external resourcesAbility to work independently to accomplish project goalsExperience working in a project team, with many customers to build support and accomplish collaborative goalsGood organizational skills with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projectsAbility to effectively present research results to a range of stakeholdersAbility to design, execute, and document industry-leading research projectsExcellent problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly learn new technical areasEPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
